Report: Industrial Visit to Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL)

 On February 20, 2025, the second-year students of the Department of Social Science and Humanities under the Institute of Management and Commerce from Srinivas University, Mangalore, undertook an industrial visit to Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemical Limited(MRPL) in Mangaluru, Karnataka. The visit was undertaken under the guidance of Dr.Venkatesh S.Amin, Dean IMC. Prof.Joyson P.Cardoza,Head of the Department, Dr.Stutima Basistha, Associate Professor,Ranjith Bhat,Associate Professor, assisted the students for the visit.  This visit aimed to provide students with practical insights into the operations of a major refinery and petrochemical complex, enhancing their understanding of the industry.                                                                                                                                                              

Overview of MRPL

MRPL, a subsidiary of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), is a Schedule 'A' Mini Ratna Category I Central Public Sector Enterprise. Located in the Mangalore Special Economic Zone, MRPL operates a state-of-the-art refinery with a capacity of 15 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA). The refinery is equipped to produce a diverse range of petroleum products, including high-quality fuels and petrochemicals.

Key Highlights of the Visit

Welcome and Orientation: Upon arrival, the students were warmly received by the Training and Placement team, wherein an interactive session was organized. This session provided an overview of MRPL's history, mission, and recent achievements, followed by a small snack.

Tour of Production Units: The students were guided through various production units, including the Crude Distillation Unit and the Hydrocracker Unit. These units are integral to MRPL's operations, enabling the production of a wide array of petroleum products.

Safety and Environmental Practices: Emphasis was placed on MRPL's commitment to safety and environmental sustainability. The students learned about the refinery's adherence to stringent safety protocols and its initiatives to minimize environmental impact through advanced technologies and processes.

Conclusion

The industrial visit to MRPL provided the MSW students of Srinivas University with valuable exposure to the practical aspects of refinery operations. This experience enriched their academic learning and offered insights into potential career paths within the energy sector. Such initiatives bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world applications, preparing students for future professional endeavors.
