Introduction
As part of a meaningful co-curricular initiative, the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities organized a video screening session for the 1st-year MSW students on 2nd August 2025. The purpose of this session was to instill in students a deeper understanding of the real-world challenges faced by marginalized communities living in Indian slums.
About the Activity
Two powerful short documentaries were screened focusing on:
The daily hardships and living conditions in urban slums.
The systemic neglect and the social injustice suffered by slum residents.
These visual stories portrayed not only the struggles of slum dwellers but also the resilience of the human spirit. The session highlighted the urgent need for policy reform, awareness, and intervention — areas where the role of a professional social worker becomes crucial.
Objective and Alignment with SDG
This activity was aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 4 – Quality Education. It aimed at providing experiential learning beyond the textbook, encouraging students to think critically and empathetically. The overarching goal was to:
-Help students realize the nobility of the social work profession.
-Encourage them to become the voice of the voiceless.
-Inspire them to view their careers as opportunities to drive social change and uplift communities.
Student Takeaways
-A deeper awareness of the socio-economic realities in urban slums.
-An emotional and intellectual connection to real-life fieldwork situations.
-Increased motivation to use their education to create a meaningful impact in society.

The initiative was managed by Dr. Stutima Basistha, with the continued support and guidance of:
Prof. Joyson Prenky Cardoza, Head of the Department
